George
and Ben Cassutto back from Israel (Aug. medio)
George and Ben safely returned to the US after having attended the Holocaust
Education Conference at the Yad Vashem Memorial Center and having presented
there.

Tom
Hartman made contact
Tom Hartman
is the grandson of Anna Cassuto, sister to Ies Cassuto. In the pedigrees
is mentioned: "Anna, 1876-1943, Auschwitz, only her daughter Dora,
married to L.Hartmann, is still alive".
Tom remembered thar George Izn passed by when he was a kid and went
with him to Rotterdam to view the rebuilding of the city after the war.
Some quotes from his mail:
(....)
was.
dame.
trompet, soms piano

Westerbork
Rob Cassuto and Minke payed a visit on July 30 to Westerbork in the
Dutch province of Drenthe.
Westerbork was the transit camp, 'Durchgangslager', for the 102.00 Dutch
Jews to be murdered in the death Camps.
Nowadays there is a memorial museum and the field of the barracks is
now a memorial field, stangely picturesque and accentuated by the radiotelecopes
in later times situated there.
Some pictures:
This sign was posted on the train cars headed for Polen
Here was the ramp from which every Tuesday, 1942- Sept. 1944, the train
with a new load of Jews and Gypsies left for Auschwitz or Sobibor
The memorial of 102.000 little pillars on the ancient appel square.
Together with the radiotelescope in the background this makes for a
picture with a very strange, intangible import
The impressive memorial of the two rail bars of the original track of
the Westerbork and eastward bound trains, the bars now ending in contorsion
and pointing to the sky.
In the background a piece of reconstructed barbed wire fence and a radiotelescope
of the world famous Westerbork radiotelescope system

and kids in a nice line
Lieve Rob,
finally a good picture of all of us at Gabe Cassutto's 9th birthday
party. We had a great time swimming at his local pool in Frederick,
Md. Left to right in the pic are Andy, Tina's boyfriend, Tina, me and
the hiker Geff. His hair had gotten longer and gained 10 pounds. So
our summer fun has begun. To let everyone know what's happening with
me, I'm working this summer in a really nice jewelry store. It's fun
work and I'm learning alot. I'll quit there a week before I start the
school job so I can at least have some kind of vacation. Veel liefs,

George
and Ben Cassutto to attend Holocaust Educators Conference in Jerusalem
George Cassutto, social sciences lead teacher at Harmony Intermediate
School,
will attend the Fourth Annual Conference on Holocaust Education this summer
in August.. He has been invited to speak at the conference, located at
the Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial museum in Jerusalem.
From George's mail: the conference is on educating future generations
on the Holocaust. When I looked over the topics the conference suggested,
I decided to develop a presentation on one of the suggested topics, that
is the use of the Internet in Holocaust Education. Anti-semitism would
be part of my discussion, but only insofar as it relates to the use of
the Internet to communicate ideas of acceptance and understanding, thereby
preventing future genocides.
Twin
brother Ben is accompanying George.
He will be discussing the role of faith in the decision to rescue
Jews.
He will also discuss the impact of the Holocaust on the religious beliefs
of survivors. It should be a very interesting talk.
We have
purchased our plane tickets and are waiting now for the day to arrive.
I will be focusing on my kids as they come to live with me for the summer
months. Teresa will be caring for them in my absence during the trip
(Aug 6-14).

update:
Hello from
Jerusalem.
I am being
timed on this kiosk, so it's gotta be quick. We had a great flight,
but got only 2 hrs sleep. It looks like I won't be able to keep an internet
log, but I will be journaling on my PC and by hand, so it will all go
up at some point, just not in real time. The country and the people
are beautiful. We are still getting acclimated to our surroundings.
We'll see the Yad Vashem museum tomorrow as the conference gets underway.
I present Tuesday and Ben wednesday. Our taxi ride from the airport
took two hours! We were the last to be dropped off, but we're refreshed
now.
I hope to send more when it's possible. Internet access is expensive
and scarce.
I love
and miss you all! George Aug. 8
(...)
I have
a moment here at Yad Vashem museum to say hello. I can also attach my
favorite picture so far. It's a chasidic Jew praying at the Western
Wall, which we visited at night.
We hope to go back Thursday during the day to see the wall and the Dome
of the Rock in the daylight. We also hope to walk the Via Dela Rosa
(sp?)* which is the path of Christ to the cross, on Thurs.
We have had an excellent conference. I did my talk to a handful, and
Ben speaks in about 2 hours.
We have been generating all kinds of controversey among the conferees,
too much to discuss here.
Our friends at the hotel have been great, and the country of Israel
is gorgeous (I may have said that before).
Today is the first cloudy day since we arrived.
I'll
be putting pics on line when I return so you can see them at your leisure.
I am at 208 on digicam right now. Not all of those are good, but most
are or they have a story behind them, so those of you who are close
by I ask your indulgence.
The coolest
thing so far is that the museum here at Yad Vashem approached me and
handed me documents on the death of my grandfather (mother's side) and
of my dad's fiancee, named Hetty.
Apparently, other relatives submitted documentation that showed Hetty
died in Chelmno, not Auchwitz as previously believed.
Also, there are Rodrigueses in Australia who documented Abraham's death
(grandfather).
Their entire database of victims, all 3,000,000 documented so far, will
go live on their website in Dec.
Also, Ben found a tree planed in the name of Tante Grie (Aunt Grace),
who his mom.
I hope to get a pic for the Cassutto Memorial Pages.
Ben called our cousin David Cassuto here in Israel, and we plan on having
dinner with him Friday for Sabbath. I was also told by the conference
director that our name is highly respected in Jerusalem society.
I even found the name of Professor Umberto Cassuto** on a display at
the Israeli Museum on the Dead Sea scrolls. I took illegal pictures
of his work, his name, and of the scrolls. Don't tell the museum :-)

Lieve Rob, the pictures of young Oma are so amazing. I see myself in her.
I'm so glad I was named after her (kind of). In '78 when I was staying
with Oom George for Irene's wedding, he showed me a picture of Oma with
braied hair. It must have been around the same time as Oma at 11. I was
astounded that I looked so much like her when I was that age. I wonder
if you have it. As far as I can see that picture I have not, but this
one looks like you too, isn't it?

Big news about Geff. He's home safe and sound. I'd like to take a picture
of him to send you because he looks a little different. He's tan and heavier
with a longer hair. It's nice to have him around but he needs to find
a new job soon. Tina is now working at the the same grocery store that
Geff did and it she's glad she's earning her own money.
That's all for now. Veel liefs ,Canne

Irene
visits "grachtentuinen", gardens in the Amsterdam Canal quarter
english summary:
Dear All,
Friday June 18 I visited with the Garden Club ladies the Open Garden
Days in Amsterdam. Once a year the gardens in the Amsterdam Canal quarter
are open for the public. Amazing is how you land in an oasis of quiet
in such a hectic town as Amsterdam is.
In the 17th age, the Golden age many rich merchants built beautiful
mansions at the canals which had to reflect their wealth and status.
The gardens were an extension of this and were very luxurious.
Most of these houses are now office, bank or museum.
One of them is already for ages the official residence of the mayor
(now mr. Job Cohen).
Of many a house only the historic facade is kept and behind it a new
modern building is constructed, surprise! Very nice to see the interior
of the houses when you walk through them to the gardens.
Though many a garden has been turned into a parking lot, luckily many
are preserved, some in their old state, some in a modern condition.
A foundation, the "Stichting
de Amsterdamse Grachtentuin" , stimulates and supports restauration
of the gardens in their original state. Ageold trees, buxus hedges,
flower beds, statues, fountains and sometimes a summer house are to
be found in the gardens. And as a consequence many birds, butterflies
and frogs are attracted to the flowers and the plants. Good work of
the foundation to preserve this garden culture for not only now but
also for future generations, we all agreed.
your Sweet
Lake City correspondent Irene
Dutch:
Lieve Allemaal
Vrijdag
tuin dagen in Amsterdam bezocht. Het thema dit jaar was :"de Amsterdamse
tuin bloeit".
below left: garden of Irene, above one of the grachtentuinen at the
Keizersgracht.
Click on the pics for enlargement.
Amsterdamse grachtentuin" opgericht.
Groetjes
van uw Zoetermeerse correspondent,
Irene

She won and I was glad I was there to see her accept the trophy. Here

What
is it to Be a "Cassut(t)o"... That's the theme of the poem
sent by Hetty
I think it is a witty approach to our family peculiarities, but Hetty
is a bit worried someone in the family may be offended. Read it and give
your feedback! It begins like this:
To hear your spouse say-you hope it's in jest-
"You are such a "Cassutto!!"-"don't be a pest!"
What is it that they may be saying?
are they frustrated, or are they just playing?
There probably is something we all have in common..

Rogier
Cassuto performing
nice pic
of Rogier in the heat of his singing performance; I understand his group
is doing fairly well.June
1 ' 04
Rogier answered my questions:
The name of my band is: "Goed Gejat" (something like: "deftly
pinched"), www.goedgejat.nl
here is our "promo"!
Iedereen
Nee toch? Je wilt GoedGejat in plaats
van slecht verzonnen!*
English:under
the slogan "long live the fun" 5 enthousiastic musicians started
a band with only one aim, to enjoy playing.
In the meantime "Goed Gejat" has grown into a terrific band
which succeeds in transferring the fun in its performance and by a good
selection of numbers.
Variation in the "well pinched" repertoir is the key. There
's something in it for everyone.
From "Di-rect" to Frans Bauer, from Frank Boeijen to REM,
from "The Dijk" to Robbie Williams: all artist and styles
have their share in our repertoir.
Recent hits and oldies you will recognize and all this makes for an
unforgettable evening in which not only the band goes crazy...
For if you want to party who needs the artificial and difficult licks
of freaking guitar players; do you? You prefer GoedGejat - "Deftly
pinched" - to "slecht verzonnen" - badly made up!*

We hired a car, very convenient.
We visited the treasures and tombs of the Etruscans, this mysterious

Also we visited Ostia Antica, which gives a good impressions of ancient
Roman commerce and way of living.

a
real motorcycle fan
Hetty discloses her husband Jim is a genuine motorcycle fan; she mails:
"This weekend Jim, his brother Jack and a few friends are off to
the speedraces at the Indianapolis 500. They go there every year with
a big camper. This year, they are taking their Harley Davidson motorcycles
along via a trailer hooked to the back of the camper.
Jim chose his 1965 ElectraGlide ( in red.. not blue ( like the old 60s
Movie..)(foto attached) as the one to ride for the trip. His brother
has a 'chopper'. "
Hetty
adds for the real motofans:
By the way, Jim is not a recent Harley fan. He bought his first one
in 1973... a 1962 one. I found a foto of that motorcycle in an old foto
album.( see old foto, left) He had a bad accident in 1975 and
broke his arm in 3 places when Calvin was just a baby. So after he had
it repaired, he sold it to a guy in the navy who took it back to San
Fransisco with him.
He has wanted another one ever since.
Here is a foto of his brother's 'chopper' too, for all of you 'radical'
motorcycle fans (above left).
Now that Jim can afford them and no longer has two children at home
who depend on him ( just a wife..) he bought the 1965 motorcycle two
years ago and had it completely restored. Then, since that was not enough,
he bought the 2003 100th anniversary edition, then found a rare 1971
"Evel Knievel" style motorcycle that was in good shape but
was painted all in black. He just recently had that one chromed and
repainted in the correct paint colors ( white, red and blue, above
right) and it is now better looking than the one on display in the
Harley Davidson dealership.
"Easy Rider" was one of Jim's favorite movies when we were
first married. Ah, the memories.

Ab
Cassuto in his element (is this also an English expression?...)
Ab mailed, that the colonscopy he had to go through turned out well.
( there is in the Cassuto family a hereditary disposition for intestine
cancer). Further monitoring is necessary though, at short notice an
intestine photo and in february a further colonscopy (this time with
anaesthetics! the last time was very painfull...)
But now for something else: Ab sent a picture of him standing behind
the bar of
"The Boerderij"
("The farm"), the giant disco in Zoetermeer ("Sweet
Lake City"). As you know probably Ab has four hobby's:
1. being a volunteer bartender at The Boerderij.
2. pop music and collecting CD's and DVD's on this subject
3. seeing and collecting Movies
4. playing guitar
Ab, please correct me if my list is incomplete or has rhe wrong order....
(I see Ab in my minds eye later doing a pop music program for the local
Zoetermeer radio)

Geff
goes on a hike
Canne Cassutto mailed on May 1:
Today my son Geff and his best friend Ken will be starting their journey
on self discovery by back backing through the Appalachian trail which
starts about an hour from my house.
Since the trail lies so close to George's, I'm driving the boys over
to George's where we'll talk a minute and then George is taking them
to the beginning of the trail where the hike begins.
They will be hiking a long time and plan to end up Georgia. From there
(if they make it) they will take a bus out to Santa Cruz, California
and stay with friends out there for a while.
Does it sound like something you might have done when you were 18?
He wants to mature into manhood by making this trip on his own without
the assistants of adults except for me driving them out to the trail.
I'm not too sure how they will let us know how they're doing except
that they want to find libraries in towns and journal online from time
to time.
Canne
sent this picture on May 3 and wrote:
this picture was taken yesterday as the boys began their hiking trip.
George was such a big help taking them to Harper's Ferry in West Virginia
to begin. Can you put this on the web site so everyone will know what
Geff is doing this summer?
So here
are the boys on the threshhold of a big adventure.
I hope
we will get some news about how they are doing from time to time!
May the
Eternal One keep them from danger and may He let them reach their destination.
Should I leave on the wings of dawn,
or should I set out for the end of the sea
also there Your hand would lead me
and Your right hand would hold me

Cassuto
artist in Israel: Nir Cassuto
On the internet I came upon the website of an Israeli graphic studio
and on a page with cooperating illustrators I saw the pictures of Nir
Cassuto.
He was
so kind as to answer my mailed questions to tell something about himself
and her work:

Rob
Cassuto back from Roman Holiday
I 'm back
from my visit with Minke to Rome and I wrote a column about some impressions
the city and its treasures made upon me:
Rome
an impression
of the eternal city
It's the
beginning of april.A smooth rain is falling on the streets and the majestic
facades of Rome.
Now and then a scarce sun ray peeps through but more then once the drizzle
gives away to a genuine shower. Our visit to the Eternal City gradually
transformed in a survival trip.Donned with rain jacks we roam the always
crowded streets, manoeuvring between the endless flow of cars, busses
and scooters to cross over.
More than once we had to press ourselves around peak hours into overcrowded
busses and subway cars, where we had to stand half choking between silent
Romans from work on their way home and used to this kind of suffering.
But luckily
there were the refuges of the churches and the museums--.

David
Cassuto Gzn reports:
Dear all,
In order tot contribute to the family forum and inform you of my doings
here is my first entry in our virtual togetherness.
how
I live
I am still living in The Hague and currently a bachelor.
I am still renting two floors as I only need one floor in my house for
myself.
I am on the third floor, on the second is an Italian guy whose name
is (of course) Marco,
he works for the European Patent Organization.
On the fourth floor is Agnes, a 24 year old nurse (with boyfriend don't
worry:.) which is always useful to have around.
work:
business project
I have left my job at Casema, the cable company, at the end of January
to start my own business.
I want to start a shop in The Hague that sells furniture, lighting and
other stuff for the home.
I want to order production of Dutch and other design in a limited production
in lower labor cost country Romania and sell these also in my shop and
on to other retailers.
Romania!
I have been to Romania already three times. It is a world away from
Western Europe in economic and political development and for sound business
communication I might as well have gone to Mars but that is part of
the challenge.
shop
The last month I have been trying to rent a shop in the centre of the
Hague on the Prinsestraat. However, the owner got in trouble and the
place itself is now squatted, so things are slowing down. I really think
the location is perfect, though so I am going to hold on on little longer
and I hope I'll be hearing more of this next week.
UPDATE':
David succeeded in renting a shop at the Noordeinde.
He will open the shop in the course of June and he promised to keep
us posted!
(RobC May 9)
my mother
Next week on Saturdaynight Michiel Marjan, Kim, Carine and I will be
in Bunnik to celebrate my Mother's birthday (actually the 21st).
She will turn 71 and she still doesn't have to dye her hair is that
not strange?
On the other hand she is in fact very very vital and still has a busier
agenda than most of us working
people!

terrorists
Al Qaeda involvement in the Madrid bombings is getting likelier every
hour.
I don't expect the supporters of George Bush's foreign policy to change
their position in view of this kind of terrorism but the fact is that
we all still live in countries that have supported the US on Iraq and
other occassions.
I make no illusions about complete safety in an international city like
The Hague but it won't change my daily life.
music
On another note: For all u music lovers out there you should know that
I am a great admirer of
The Rasmus, a Finish band that is currently conquering Europe with a
blast.
Via the link I put below you will find a German page with two of their
best songs, In the Shadows and First Day of My life.
If you either like the Beatles or Nirvana you should want to hear this.
Not limited by any identification with a trend or style I also like
The Black Eyed Peas and some Gothic music by the Dutch band Within Temptation
and the US-band Evanescence.

Dean
Chryssovergis and
family
Recent picture of Lynne's son Dean (right).
It was taken at his work, Fox News, and he is posing with a member of
the New Jersey Devils hockey team, Ken Danyko. The Ice Hockey
Stanley Cup is between them.
I , (RobC)asked
Dean some questions which he kindly answered: "I have been working
at FOX News Channel in New York City for about two years now. My official
title is "Production Assistant" which is the typical position
for a college graduate.
Right now, I mostly cut or edit or log video footage... Any footage that
goes on air that is not the anchors speaking has gone through me. I also
do other things like prepare graphics or deliver scripts to anchors/directors.
I specifically work for the show "FOX and Friends" ...which
is the channel's morning show. (which means that I have to work the overnight
shift, also)
I can not
say that I am a huge fan of hockey, but taking your picture with the
Stanley Cup is an honor. Also, the hockey player in the picture is a
player from the New Jersey team, he retired this year, so it makes the
picture more valuable.
My greek
nickname is Kosta. No one in America calls me that really, exceot for
a few people. I like it though. Other than my Greek family, the only
people I remember calling me that were Uncle Max, George and Opa"
More about Dean? Visit his "spot
on the web"
Below a
picture of the chryssovergis family,
from left to right Dean, Marilyn Cassutto-Chryssovergis and Alex.
Marilyn mails:
"For the last 4 years, Alex has been working for a catering business,
which delivers lunches to offices having business meetings. This is
a better position from the restaurant work he has done in the past,
which can be long hours, with no break on weekends and holidays. At
present, he works from early in the morning until 3 or 4pm, without
having to work weekends or holidays. We are very grateful that he has
found such a position.
For the past 20 years I have done office work in accounting. I have
been at my current company, a metal distributor, since April 2002. The
office is located 4 minutes driving from home, and so I can even walk
there if necessary.
In
June 2004, Alex and I will reach the 30 year mark of our wedding, and
so we are very grateful to God for His many blessings! We attribute
the strength of our relationship to our shared faith in God."

P.S. Chryssovergis
is a Greek name and literally translated means: golden rod, Dutch: Gouden

Rogier
and Marloes Cassuto to move in new house
Rogier writes: "good idea to put it on the family site
(so I can spare a whole lotta cards and I forget no one!)
The new address:
Oliver
Hardeystrook 27
2726 TX Zoetermeer
Netherlands
Certainly
a house warming party is intended,
only the precise date is not yet possible to give
There
is still a lot to be done and
we estimate to be able to move in about 6 weeks"
Marloes
mails:
"After all we have conquered a little house.
It is a small one family house wirhout an attic, but big enough for
us.
Each of us has a large sleeping room and besides a small room for all
kind of personal stuff.
The housing organisation will install a new kitchen and we 'll have
to wait for that but in the meantime we are busy painting.
Fortunately Rogier and I have about the same taste so there 's no need
for quarrelling, hahaha.
I suppose in the course of spring we 'll give a house warming party,
so I 'll send you an invitation then."
Good luck,
Marloes and Rogier (fot the more distant visitor: they are brother and
sister)
and don't forget to send a picture of the new house!
