The wooden staircase to the balcony, where Oma Lien Cassuto spent so many hours, has disappeared. Extreme right begins the forefront of Opa Ies Cassuto's study, where he almost permanently was reading and studying and pondering only to pop up for a short break in the living room to make a joke, drink thea with his children and to caress his grandchildren. In the basement Max and Puck and children Rob, Irene and Ab lived for many years. Where now the stones are under Hetty's feet there was a garden with gravel, grass and tulips. |

Verjaardag/birthday of Irene The big festivities are yet to come but a select company gathered 'chez
Irene's ' , the complete branch of George sr Cassuto and Max Cassuto
came together, a real family 'kumpulan', a rare event these days and
of course the Ernest branch was dearly missed... Presents
were given and shmoozing filled the air and you may guess wat the menu
offered.... Indonesian food, rijsttafel, of course (Jewish: nashi).
Here are some pics and below a song made by Rob for this occasion.
Karel made also some nice photo's:

Oma one more time Lieve familie en vrienden!! I will say it in Dutch and English...."one more time Oma!", ik wordt nog een keer Oma!! This time it is Calvin and Kim! Kim is already in her 12th week; she went for her scan yesterday and the baby was moving and healthy with the strong heartbeat. Calvin is very excited. They will be parents around Dec. 11!! They told Jim and me at the end of April when she was 7 weeks, but we were told to keep it a secret until Kim gave the "go ahead" yesterday. So Kelly and Mike did not know til then, either. Believe me, it was a very difficult secret to keep! Ainsley and Bea will have a little cousin, how exciting. Keep the happy couple in your thoughts and prayers for the months to come. Veel liefs, Hetty PS... I already feel that it is a BOY. |

special delivery Some less agreeable devolpments in the field of health for Rob: An Echo inquiry demonstrated a new and unexplained spot in the liver and an irregularity in the bladder. A consecutive CT scan confirmed the spots and the necessity for further examination. So a cystoscopy will be inevitable to determine the presence of a possible malign tumor in the bladder, which could be the source of dissemination to the liver. The spot there may be liver cancer. A MRI scan will probably be an additional measure of necessary examination. As you may know Rob has got hepatitis c diagnosed in 2001. When you are interested in his experiences since then, all may be read on his special hepc diary on his Caslog website:click here The weather is fabulous and a brightly shining sun makes it like midsummer. The massive presence of coloured personnel in the Amsterdam Medical Center makes it obvious that the Netherlands can't do without their immigrants from the West and the South, we maybe thankful for their coming to the bedside of our sick (among which there also are many allochtones of course). injustice
Opa (follow up) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Geachte heer Cassutto, PROF. Met vriendelijke groeten, signed Cees Fasseur an
injustice to our (great)grandfather Nijmegen,
17 maart 2008 betr.: vermelding prof. Is. H. Cassutto in “De Indologen” bijlagen: fotocopie Utr. Nieuwsblad; fotocopie brief prof. Geyl; brief dr. Broeyer. Geachte heer Fasseur, In uw boek
‘de Indologen’ komt de joodse prof. I.H. Cassutto twee keer
van het Utrechts Nieuwsblad stelt, dat inderdaad fouten zijn begaan;
I.H. Cassutto in uw boek
niet als plagiaris af te schilderen, maar een genuanceerder beeld over
deze zaak te schetsen. Isaac Cassutto
verdient het niet in de annalen van de geschiedenis als plagiaris herinnerd
te worden. met vriendelijke
groet, drs. Rob Cassuto mede namens mevr. mr. Hanneke Cassuto-van Royen. |

The
Ernest and Elly tapes Rob 24/12 2007: What a surprise to receive from Dean a CD with all those classical takes of the family and of the compositions of Ernest. The voices of Ernest, Elly George are so familiar and so alive you can't hardly believe they are not among us anymore. It 's a great service to the family heritage, that he saved those takes from a slow but certain decline. When I hear those nice songs like So long Cherie and Yellow Tie and some others I wonder if there is some sheet music left, maybe in you possession. I should like to give it a try to play them with my guitar (the chords seem pretty sophisticated) and maybe it's worthwhile to interest some musical connections of mine to give a fresh performance, who knows. It would be a pity when those compositions, nice as they are and in some measure a representation of those seemingly carefree years before WW II, should slide in oblivion. Hetty answered: Lieve Rob, Seasons Greetings, Happy holidays, etc!! Yes-- we were all surprised and glad to receive Dean's CD of the old Mom and Dad tapes. These were from 2 or 3 old tapes that I had made copies of and given to the sisters and brothers. As it happens, since you made mention of Dad's Sheet music, I do have the original sheet music Dad made for some of these songs, such as "So Long Cherie" which he published using the name "Ernest Hampton" to keep the Nazis from sniffing him out. I also think there is a published sheet of "You're Like a Rose". I also have what was referred to as "het Heilige Boek". Do you remember what that is?? I bet you do!! I would love to plan a visit to Holland during 2008 since I will be officially RETIRED from my work at year's end. Hallelujah. I then would like to plan some travels and I will definitely bring this material with me for you to make copies or preserve as you wish. Veel liefs, Hetty Rob:Thanx, Hetty, for your answer and intention to copy. I suddenly remember that uncle George made an effort to stir interest for the songs: when I was still a boy - it was maybe end of the fifties - I accompanied him in a visit to a well known piano player in the light music area, Govert van Oest, who was then the pianist of the famous cabaret artist Toon Hermans. But apparently nothing came of it. And So long cherie has been performed for the radio, just before or in the beginning of the war, by a then well known singer, whose name I forgot. Sometimes it feels, like I was present there in the Danckert street in the Hague during those 'gezellige' family gatherings in 1938, 1939, singing, joking, and telling stories, but of course I was not yet born. The 'Heilige boek' wasn't it the collection of all the songs? I am not sure. Tell me. Let's say, see you around in Holland some day in 2008 ... This is the backside and content of Deans CD: Marilyn: I told Dean that Uncle George does not really know the lyrics that well, and he is making them up as he goes along. I find it very frustrating that the song is being sung without the correct words. I heard my mother sing the song very frequently and this is how I remember her singing it: So Long Cherie With this tune I must leave you, with this tune I must grieve you. It's my country that calls me. Here's my song just to say: So long cherie, so long cherie. Though you are sweet, though you are smart, I can't remain. So long cherie, so long cherie. In happy times when peace is here we'll meet again. Darling darling, oh stop crying. Please be brave and smile through your tears. So long cherie, so long cherie. In happy times when peace is here, we'll meet again |

holidays 2007 Ainsley and Bea in anticipation of X-mas dear Hetty and other kin, Thanx for your best wishes, Ainsley and Bea are growing "als kool" , as we say in Dutch, remember? Your pics make us a real witness of their flowering development. Chanukkah I celebrated by lighting the candles according to tradition and also I sung with my choir at the 5th day in my reform jewish congregation, see the photo and me in the midst. We sung a mix of Jewish songs, liturigal Hebrew, jiddish and ladino (the jewish-spanish dialect). Then we had a very "gezellig samenzijn". As for the rest of the Dutch Cassuto's, I suppose only Hanneke and Carine celebrate Chanukkah. Did you know Hanneke has had an operation and is now recovering well? At Sinterklaas we don't unite anymore, but at X-mas, we Max Cassuto children observe the tradition of coming together, this year Ab, Karel and Irene will "deo volente" come to Nymegen and we have dinner at my good friend Minke's house. blessing for nice holidays and 'liefs' van Rob Choir "Hatikwa" singing at Chanukkah gathering. a mensch This is a TRUE story. This happened to me today, at my job. A few days ago, I noticed that a patient named "Sidney Mandell" had a few physical therapy appointments and was due to come in soon. As the name struck a note with me, I wondered to Jim if this was the same "Sid Mandell" that had the wonderful delicatessen near our old house off Liberty Rd, where Mom and Dad were such faithful customers 35-40 years ago. Mr. Mandell, the patient, was almost 91 years old so it could be the same. Jim said, to tell him, if it was indeed "THE Sid Mandell," how we spent many Sunday afternoons eating our lunch there because our parents would fight over whom we should eat with, and thanks to him, we had a wonderful courtship and have been married almost 40 years. So far, our paths had not crossed. until today. This morning, an elderly gentleman with a walker came to my window, clutching an envelope stuffed with Blue Shield paperwork and asked me for help. I gently asked him his name, and he replied, "Sid Mandell". Well.. finally! Here was my chance to tell him my little story. He enjoyed it, but then he asked me where did my then-fiance and I live at that time. When I told him, I added that my dad had the Hebrew Christian Church across the street. A solemn, soft look came across his face. He leaned into the window, and said, "You may not know this, but many years ago I volunteered at Sinai Hospital. I used to come in to your father's room and feed him his breakfast every morning after he had "the stroke". ( Dad actually was suffering from a wide assortment of ailments, and had had a heart attack, but that was not important.) He then went on and said, "And your mother, she taught French, right? and you have a brother." I smiled and said I had two, and two sisters. He continued on, leaning back, and said "Rev. Cassutto", as if the name had just returned to his memory. "I would stay at his bedside until you kids would come and visit. I vowed that I had fed your father when he was alive and well, and I would continue to do so when he was sick". By this time, I was in tears. I came from around my office door and embraced him. What love and kindness this man had shown my father in his time of need. I had no idea that dad had meant so much to him. He even mentioned that Dad had given him a copy of "The Last Jew of Rotterdam". As he took my business card, we then talked about what I could do for him about his questions regarding his insurance coverage. We wished each other well. Mr. Mandell said he was glad to have met me. I told him, I was more than happy that he came to see me today. It was as if Dad had come down from heaven and touched me, through Mr. Mandel. Here was a Jew who showed me what brotherly love was all about. "Do Unto Others" was Jesus' commandment, and Mr. Mandell was the shining example of that. What a 'mensch'! Love, Hetty, July 26 07 |
