Ab Cassuto's retirement party
after many years of dedicated service at the Government Department of Transport (Personnel management office) Ab Cassuto retired and a reception at Nov. 25 '04 underlined the appreciation
of Ab's employer and his many colleagues of present and past. Rob, his elder brother, sister Irene, his kids were also present, the band of son Rogier included.

Ab speaks a word of thanks after the speeches of hos boss and the wonderful presentation of a CD Rom, overviewing his life before and during his civil servant time. More pictures

oud en nieuw bij Rob

Tradition wills that at 24.00 o'clock we go to the twelfth floor of my apartment building, where we have a grand view over Nymegen en the abundant fireworks the Duth indulge themselves in. We don't spend a dime on it but this way we have a free enjoyment. On this picture the outbursts are not so spectacular as they have really been.

We were four. Left Ad Krol and me having a good catch, Josee Clerx, who is on the right picture left, then Minke and then Ad

x-mas at Rob Cassuto's

Cassuto's in Nymegen
also this year the tradition of the Max and Puck family of reuniting at x-mas brought together Rob (behind the camera), Karel, Irene, Ab and Minke this time at Rob's place. Here they are sitting after dinner on the couch. In front of them is the christmas tree, in this case brought by Minke, a mini version of two inch tall, and the small presents soon to be exchanged. Later some more pics taken by Karel. Below a look in Rob's kitchen.

ash ritual on the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel)

lake Yssel

Sun going down on the IJsselmeer; when you drive from Lelystad on the new polders extracted from the ancient Zuiderzee, now IJsselmeer, to Enkhuizen in the north of the province of North Holland, along the dike which separates two masses of water, you arrive on a point with a small finger of land with a view as seen above.
On this point my good friend Minke, her niece Fenna and me performed the ritual of dispersing over the water the ashes of Minkes father who deceased some weeks ago (Aug. 14) , may he rest in peace.
After the cremation the ashes had been neatly conserved in a vase which we brought with us.

American Cassuto's George, Marilyn, Alex and Dean and Canne gather at Flesch wedding

Two weeks ago George, Marilyn, Alex and Dean and Canne and I all went to a lovely hotel in N.J for the wedding of Olav Flesch's daughter Valerie, to her fiance Christopher Emerick. It was a beautiful day with perfect weather for an outdoor ceremony. Here are a few nice fotos of all of us. Sept. '04

a visit to X-mas 1966

nice old picture of 3 brothers Cassuto, 1966, together in the front room of Vogelkersstraat 82, The Hague, home of Max and family. Nice view on the "erker"(bay window) . Time of the year was X-mas. Mark the typical posture of George, right, and the "amused "smile of Max. middle, familiar to us. Also Ernest looks very pleased.
Apparently the photo has been stored somewhere in an old box for a long time, the patina of the past has laid itself upon it, it all fits together.
In the same time this picture was taken: Hetty, Ab, Irene at the x-mas tree.
Hetty sent these pics, thanks.

Irene's garden; Irene is a great lover of beautiful gardens; her own garden at a Zoetermeer canal is a little paradise, in which she and Karel spend many a relaxing moment

And this is one of the "grachtentuinen", gardens in the Amsterdam canal quarter, of late visited by Irene and her club of garden afficionado's. The garden below is at the Keizersgracht.

What is it to Be a "Cassut(t)o"...

To hear your spouse say-you hope it's in jest-
"You are such a "Cassutto!!"-"don't be a pest!"
What is it that they may be saying?
are they frustrated, or are they just playing?

There probably is something we all have in common..
besides our bald heads, noses and 'namen';
Are we obsessive/compulsive or just plain neurotic?
Are our illnesses real, imagined or could they be chronic?

Why is it that we love to hear ourselves talking?
We are singing, humming or whistling as we are walking.
We love our music, books, movies and learning;
Of religious thought and heaven there is much yearning.

Though our families are across the Atlantic,
there are feelings here and away that may seem quite frantic.
We must keep the connections going and stay always in touch-
Whether it's in English, Yiddish, French or Dutch!

So set out the coffee, cake, cookies and cheese-
When Cassuttos are here, we say "pass the food, please"
Eating is something we all do with pleasure,
so we must watch the weight and take it with measure.

We call, send letters and emails and remember good times and bad;
Look at old photos and laugh or cry if we're sad.
For the family's care we pray to God up above.
and most of all, we send all you Cassuttos our love.

Hope you like this bit of lighthearted poetry from-

Hetty

Rob C: quite a good picture. Moreover: Cassuto's got a lot of emotions
but find it not easy to show
they are good at language but clumsy at technics
in the field of sensuality they are a bit shy

and some dutch Cassuto's at a christmas dinner 1999, left to right:
Marloes, Rob, Ab, father/uncle/opa Max z.l., Irene. And someone who took the picture! I don't remember....The location is the flat of Max in The Hague, where all those christmas dinners took place past years; the picture also is meant to preserve the memory of this flat. In the background we see on the shelf the twelve or more books of historian Lou de Jong on World War II.

nice picture of Puck Cassuto-van Zuiden, our mom, oma, aunt, as she really was in her last years. Thanks Ab, who found it behind another picture in a frame
